Multi-REC Electronic Cargo Tracking System close to the end of its piloting test

Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi are participating to the pilot phase of the Corridor Trip Monitoring System (CTMS), a project for the electronic monitoring and surveillance of cargo and truckers movements developed by the Tripartite policy organs with the financial support of the EU to facilitate safe cross border movement of goods and persons along the main corridors in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Kenya advances negotiations on the interim Economic Partnership Agreement with the EU

On 17 February 2022 the EU and Kenya agreed to advance negotiations on the conclusion of an interim Economic Partnership Agreement (iEPA). This iEPA is expected to improve trade and investment opportunities and help boost sustainable economic growth and job creation in Kenya. EPAs are free trade agreements initially conceived by the EU to cover groups of countries aggregated in specific regional areas with the purpose of streamlining negotiations with them. However, some of them have been concluded with individual African countries in view of their progressive extension to other countries pertaining to the same region. This is the case of Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon.

WCO will contribute to AfCFTA implementation through support to African Customs

On 15 February 2022the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat met at WCO Headquarters to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening the organisational capacity, transparency and effectiveness of African Customs administrations in a sustainable manner through cooperation between both Organizations.

The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements (SFPA) of the EU with African countries

Currently, 15 African countries have concluded bilateral agreements called “Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements” (SFPA) with the EU allowing fishing in their respective waters. However, 4 of such agreements (with Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Madagascar and Mozambique) are “dormant” as there is no implementing protocol in force setting out the criteria for fishing in their respective waters, including the modalities for issuing the relevant fishing authorisations. The consequence of this “dormant” status of the above agreements is that that EU vessels are not allowed to fish in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of such countries.
