Benin adopts export surcharges to control prices of certain agricultural products

Despite the good performance of agriculture, the Benin economy is facing since the second half of 2020 a continuous rise in prices of some agricultural products due to the increasing demand from neighboring countries, which has caused prices to soar due to their reduced availability in the internal market.

Sixth European Union - African Union Summit starts

European Union leaders and African Union member states will meet in Brussels (Belgium) for the sixth European Union - African Union Summit on 17 and 18 February 2022. The 2022 Summit will be an occasion for rethinking the EU’s approach towards Africa, in the face of major new economic developments and transformations that have recently taken place on the continent, most recently with the creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims at increasing Africa’s trade position in the global market and to strengthen its voice in global trade negotiations.

Congo Brazzaville starts implementation of conformity assessment program

The Congo-Brazzaville Agency for Standardization and Quality (ACONOQ) has appointed Cotecna and Bureau Veritas as certification bodies for the Congolese Conformity Assessment Program (PCEC) for products exported to Congo. The PCEC was launched in October 2021 to ensure that products imported into the Republic of Congo comply with applicable standards before shipment, to avoid the entry into Congo of unsafe and substandard products. Regulated products will be rejected by Congo Customs unless accompanied by a Certificate of Conformity issued by an authorized conformity body.

Sub-Saharan Africa lagging behind in the implementation of trade facilitation measures

The United Nations Global Report for Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation makes an inventory of all measures globally available to facilitate trade, with their implementation rates in the different regions of the world. A total of 58 measures are identified, classified into four groups: 1) “General Trade Facilitation”, 2) ”Digital Trade Facilitation”, 3) “Sustainable Trade Facilitation” and 4) “Other Trade Facilitation”. Each measure is organised in a table that shows which ones of them is covered by a specific provision of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA).

New published report assesses level of integration of services in Africa

The 10th edition of Assessing Regional Integration in Africa X (ARIA X), the popular publication realised by the United Nations, Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in collaboration with the African Union Commission; the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the African Development Bank, focuses mainly on services liberalisation and integration in the context of the AfCFTA.
